After breast-conserving surgery

In breast-conserving surgery, the risk of cancer cells remaining, lurking or hiding close by always is a threat, even when the surgeon does an immaculate job of carefully removing them. That’s why radiation is so important if you have breast-conserving surgery. It zaps those cancer cells that may be lurking behind and reduces the risk of recurrence significantly. For example:

In one large study of women with invasive cancer who received radiation treatment, radiation reduced the risk overall by 75 percent. To the individual woman, the absolute benefit was a reduction from 35 percent likelihood of recurrence to 10 percent likelihood.

In another study of women with DCIS who were given radiation therapy, the absolute benefit was a reduction from 14 percent likelihood of recurrence to only a 4 percent likelihood.
